In Ghost Witness, Mårten Lange tells the story of Chinese megacities, rushing towards the future with the past following silently behind, like a spectre in the smog. Suspended in a liminal state between constant construction and expansion, Lange questions what it means for humanity to dwell inside environments that are planned, designed and repeated, with little recourse for history, transition and change.
We collaborated with Lange directly on his immersive, gridded approach. Lange's dystopian sequence alternates between incomplete, broken gridded spreads of up to eight images, and sections of large-format, immersive details. A rough, triple-hit cover merges and solarises the graphic shapes of his architectural studies into one imagined landscape.
