The V&A Photography Library is a new series of accessible, introductory volumes to the key themes, works, objects and individuals in photography, illustrated with unprecedented access to the V&A’s photography collection: the oldest held by a public museum and one of the largest and finest in the world.
We were approached by Thames & Hudson to find a way to connect the V&A's diverse collections, from the earliest photographs to the most modern, in an accessible and flexible format for an ongoing series of books. The first two titles, Cameraless Photography and Making It Up: Photographic Fictions, published in September 2018 with Into the Woods and Autofocus published in October 2019. The books employ a visual style that emphasises details and the tactile qualities of their physical holdings, as well as using contemporary Victorian revival typefaces (Pegasus by Dinamo and Figgins Sans by Nick Shinn) to highlight the connections across history throughout the books.
